A positive Me Inc review.First, here is a picture of the Me Inc "booth". What did SCO give the sales critter to make him smile like that? At least they didn't make his life more difficult by having SCO logos anywhere. SCO spent millions for the brand identity, and now they won't use it when they market something. Here is the token positive review. http://www.brighthand.com/default.asp?newsID=12724 Shout Postcard Next to the Palm booth was a company called Me, Inc, and its product Shout Postcard. The premise of the application is to share your life's events while on the go. Essentially it is a SMS/MMS/email-like client. But the usability of it is even better than Palm's own Messaging application on the Treo smartphones. In the demonstration of this application, the rep showed me how easy it was to send someone an email message that contained a link to a photo and voice recording that he produced. There is also some blog-like features to this where you could have people go to a page and see all of those messages that you delegate as public (I was told that a private feature is in the works so that only those you approve can view the content on web browser). The most interesting aspect of Shout Postcard was getting the answer that this is something that we should expect to see on a future Palm OS device. In terms of current devices, it will be available in three weeks and does support the Treo 650, 680, and 700p models. And here is a review by someone who actually tried the application.

Not sure what version of the software/service you're using Rick, but for the sake of science I downloaded it, installed it on my 650 and sent a 'Shout Postcard'. Once I'd agreed to the extensive EULA, I was able to use the interface to take a picture and record a sound. I grant you, interfaces are 'eye of the beholder' things; personally I much prefer an OS-standard UI to my apps. In Shout Postcard, none of the regular Palm elements (menu bar, cut/copy/paste, etc) are present and the response to entry is very sluggish. In fact the app takes 15 seconds just to start up (from the memory card. Compare with TCPMP - with all codecs - at 3 seconds). Once I had created my postcard, I was prompted to either "create an account" or "log in". So I created an account - name, email and password - and hit "Send". After three tries - bad network connection, more on this later - the message sent. I then received an email asking me to confirm that I wanted to get a Shout account, which I did. I then received three emails saying I had a postcard waiting. I clicked on the newest one - noting that it was sending my email address in the URL - and sure enough, my postcard was waiting, in the form of a Flash movie. I then clicked on the links in the other two, which were the same except with no sound, and the stock "Shout Postcard" photo, which is two dudes and a girl on the beach. Apparently on the first two attempts, it got far enough to send the text of the message, but not far enough for the pic or sound. So it substituted its default photo. How confusing that would be for an unenlightened recipient. So, having tried the app, here are my responses: - you certainly do have to register, and you are giving SCO your info plus that of your recipients - 700K is very large for a Palm app. Google Maps, for instance, checks in at 432K. Space is at a premium, at least on my Treo. - Compare all the above to MMS: Take photo using native app, hit the envelope icon, add sound and text, choose recipient email from contacts, hit send and wait. Recipient receives email with picture and sound as attachments. Okay, the Shout thing is "prettier" but come on, no way is it a more convenient or elegant solution.
Sorry for the long response, but it honestly doesn't sound like you tried this "download of the day" beyond a cursory install. It looks like SCOx paid a bundle to astroturf about Shout Postcard. There are bunches of links, but this was the only discussion I found. If you really want this application, the web version should be available eventually. Imagine being able to send email from a webpage! What will they think of next? |
